(SRN NEWS)-(  )  Religious freedom is a big priority for the Southern Baptist Convention and Dr. Christopher Schelin (SHELL-in) is not surprised.  The professor at Starr King school for the Ministry in California says it’s in the blood, adding “Baptists faced legal obstacles and sometimes violent persecution in the 13 colonies with established churches.  And so they became fierce advocates for religious liberty during the American Revolution and the framing of the Constitution.”  Conservative Baptists continue to lead the battle for freedom of conscience in the 21st century.  Schelin is the author of “The Contestable Church: Dissent, Democracy and Baptist Ecclesiology.

(  )  The Speaker of the House is praising a court decision that will allow the 10 Commandments to be posted in Louisiana’s public school classrooms.  Republican Mike Johnson, who represents Louisiana, says the new law is not an effort to establish religion, but to acknowledge the country’s “history and tradition.”  In its decision, the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals said it was too early to make a judgment call on the constitutionality of the law.  That’s partly because it’s not yet clear how prominently schools may display the Decalogue or if other texts like the Mayflower Compact or the Declaration of Independence will also be displayed.

(  )  Police in Sri Lanka have arrested the country’s former intelligence chief in connection with suicide bomb attacks on Easter Sunday 2019 that targeted several churchese and killed nearly 270 people.  The attacks were believed to be inspired by ISIS.  Suresh Salley was arrested by the country’s Criminal Investigation Department and is accused of “lapses” that helped the terrorists carry out their plans.  One Protestant church and two Catholic churches were targeted while worshippers were celebrating the holiday.  The terrorists also set off explosives at a trio of popular hotels which were packed with visitors.

(  )  California Democratic Governor Gavin Newsom is on a book tour designed to promote his expected candidacy for president in 2028.  But he is being hammered by LGBT activists who don’t consider him liberal enough.  At issue is an interview Newsom gave to CNN recently in which he said that the Democratic Party needs to be “more culturally normal and less prone to spending a disproportionate amount of time on pronouns and identity.”  As governor of California, Newsom has been a strong advocate of the LGBT agenda and conservatives say his new position is a cynical attempt to get elected.
