( SRN NEWS ) LGBT people in the U.S. say transgender individuals are more likely than lesbian, gay or bisexual people to be rejected by society at large. A new poll from the Pew Research Center poll finds that most LGBT adults believe there is a great deal or fair amount of acceptance for lesbian and gay people. But about half say that’s not true for transgender and so-called “nonbinary” Americans. The vigorous promotion of transgenderism in the country has sparked a backlash, especially amongst parents who do not want that lifestyle promoted in the schools.
( ) California is trying out a complicated new system for allowing boys to compete against girls in school sports, but give the girls medals anyway. The plan would recognize a male, female and transgender winner for each event in high school track and field. Sophie Lorey of the California’s Family Council doesn’t like the ideal. She says “If they have to create special exceptions and backdoor rule changes to placate frustrated athletes, that’s not equality, that’s a confession. Girls’ sports should be for girls, full stop.”
( ) A new updated version of “The Sacred Harp” is on its way. “The Sacred Harp” is a pre-Civil War compilation of sacred songs that is central to a more than 180-year-old American a cappella singing tradition that continues to operate in many churches. First published in 1844, the shape-note hymnal has been revised a number of times to make space for songs by living composers. The last revision took place in 1991. Shape-note singing helps amateurs quickly learn new songs without having to learn the traditional way of reading music.
( ) Several foundations have donated 1.5 million dollars to help rebuild a historic black church gutted by arson. Clayborn Temple in Memphis had been undergoing a yearslong renovation when someone intentionally set a fire inside the building in the early hours of April 28th, destroying almost everything but parts of the facade. Before the fire, the Romanesque revival church was in the midst of a 25 million dollar restoration project that included restoring its 3,000-pipe grand organ. Clayborn Temple played an important role in the civil rights movement.
