(SRN NEWS)-( ) A New Jersey man has pleaded guilty to charges that he brought dozens of homemade explosive devices to a Washington, D.C., church that was preparing for an annual Mass celebrating the start of the Supreme Court’s term. Louis Geri (GARY) was arrested last October outside St. Matthew’s Cathedral, where police officers were clearing the area before the annual Red Mass. Some justices usually attend the celebration, but none went to last year’s ceremony. Police found paperwork in Geri’s possession that expressed animosity toward Catholics, Jewish people, the Supreme Court and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
( ) Cologne Cathedral, a famous German landmark and popular tourist draw, will start charging an admission fee to visitors as church officials struggle with rising maintenance costs. They say inflation and rising personnel costs have led to a constant increase in the price of the upkeep of the building. The gigantic twin-spired church towers over Cologne’s main railway station, next to the Rhine River, and dominates the city skyline. Construction began in 1248 and was finally completed in 1880. It welcomes about six million visitors each year and was added to the list of UNESCO World Heritage sites in 1996.
( ) London police say four men have been arrested on suspicion of aiding Iran by spying on the Jewish community. The Metropolitan Police say the suspects, one Iranian and three dual British-Iranian nationals, were taken into custody on suspicion of assisting a foreign intelligence service. Britain’s Campaign Against Anti-Semitism says it is grateful to police for foiling the alleged plot but accuses the government of not taking the threat from Iran seriously. The Campaign says “The United Kingdom may not be acting against Iran but Iran is acting against us.” Anti-Semitism in the U.K. has surged in recent years.
( ) International Christian Concern is urging the Trump administration to address persecution of believers in sub-Saharan Africa. ICC has cheered the president for trying to curb persecution in Nigeria, but the organization wants to make sure other bad actors — including Ethiopia — don’t slip off the radar. A new ICC report reveals that “In nearly every corner of Ethiopia, Christians suffer violence. The conflicts vary in their sources, but the outcome too often ends the same way: death or displacement. Ethiopia has been a home to Christians for nearly the entire history of the church, going back to the book of Acts.”
