(  )  According to a new report from the California government, Jewish people were the targets of nearly 300 hate crimes in the state last year.  That accounts for about 75 percent of the 400 total hate crimes in California, despite the fact that Jews make up only three percent of the population.  Daniel Mariaschin (muh-REE-uh-shin) of B’nai B’rith International tells the Jewish News Service “Whether in California or elsewhere, elected officials, law enforcement, the media, educators and community leaders all have an obligation to address this spiral—now.”  Anti-Semitism has been on the rise all around the world in recent years and the U.S. has not been spared.

(  )  Fewer members of the general population are Christian these days.  Church attendance and other spiritual practices are in decline, but there’s one thing people still do and that’s pray.  According to a new poll from the Barna Group, a Christian research organization, 73 percent of American adults say they pray at least once a week and Christians pray a lot more.  As the Barna report puts it “Spiritual longing remains active even when institutional participation wavers.”  Older Americans of all stripes are more likely to pray on a regular basis than are young people.  Women are generally more likely to pray than men.
