(SRN NEWS) Investigators say the leak of a Wisconsin Supreme Court abortion order last year was likely deliberate, but they don’t know who was responsible. The June leak of a draft order showed the court would take a case brought by Planned Parenthood, which is seeking to declare access to abortion a right protected by the state constitution. The Wisconsin court has yet to set a date for oral arguments in the Planned Parenthood case. The seven justices have released a statement calling the leak “a breach of trust the court had not experienced in its history.”
( ) The Ohio Supreme Court has reinstated a law banning sex-change operations on children. The measure also bars males from competing on women’s sports teams. The high court’s 4-to-3 decision reverses a lower court ruling in March that blocked the 2023 legislation from taking effect. The decision marks a victory for Republican Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost, who has characterized the legal dispute as a fight “to protect these unprotected children.” The American Civil Liberties Union filed suit to challenge the law.
( ) A Republican state lawmaker from Maine is appealing to the U.S. Supreme Court after she was censured by the state House for a social media post. Representative Laurel Libby’s post condemned the state high school athletic association for allowing a boy to compete against girls in track and field. Libby argues that the censure by the House has blocked her from voting on the floor, leaving the residents she represents with no representation. She is asking the Supreme Court for an order requiring her votes to be counted as her lawsuit plays out.
( ) The governing body of women’s soccer in England says males will be banned from playing on female teams, following a Supreme Court ruling last month. The Football Association says it’s changing its rules that had allowed men to play on women’s soccer teams if they had reduced testosterone levels. The Scottish Football Association made a similar decision last week. The U.K’s highest court ruling defines a woman for anti-discrimination purposes as someone born biologically female. Men are also being barred from women’s toilets and hospital wards.
