A knee injury has kept Kutter Crawford from making his 2025 debut for the Boston Red Sox, but a more recent ailment is expected to keep the right-handed pitcher sidelined for the rest of the season.

Speaking to reporters on Wednesday ahead of his team’s series finale at the Los Angeles Angels, Boston manager Alex Cora said that Crawford will undergo right wrist surgery and is “likely” out for the year.

Crawford, 29, opened the season on the injured list with right patellar tendinopathy. He battled through a knee injury throughout the 2024 season, during which he made a career-high 33 starts and 183 2/3 innings pitched. The injury reportedly subsided with treatment over the winter before flaring up just before spring training.

According to Cora, Crawford injured his wrist in an off-field incident, although the manager did not provide additional details other than emphasizing that it was not due to irresponsible activity. Cora first made mention of Crawford’s latest injury while the Red Sox were in San Francisco over the weekend, noting that the pitcher was flying to Boston for an MRI on his wrist.

In parts of four seasons with Boston (2021-24), Crawford has gone 18-31 in 86 games (69 starts) with a 4.56 ERA, 118 walks and 389 strikeouts, including a career-best 175 in 2024.
