(Reuters) – Edmonton Oilers captain Connor McDavid is expected to miss two to three weeks with an ankle injury, the National Hockey League team said on Wednesday.
McDavid, a three-time NHL Most Valuable Player and five-time scoring champion, suffered the injury moments after the opening faceoff of Monday’s game in Columbus when he was tripped and fell awkwardly into the boards.
“After further evaluation in Edmonton yesterday, he is expected to return to action in two to three weeks,” the Oilers said in a news release.
McDavid, who last season won the Conn Smythe Trophy as the playoffs MVP after leading Edmonton to the Stanley Cup Final where they came one win short of a championship, is tied with Leon Draisaitl for the Oilers lead with 10 points this season.
Edmonton are 4-5-1 this season.
