WASHINGTON (Reuters) -California Governor Gavin Newsom said on Sunday he will take the Trump administration to court over the deployment of 300 California National Guard personnel to Oregon.

“After a federal court blocked his attempt to federalize the Oregon National Guard, Donald Trump is deploying 300 California National Guard personnel into Oregon,” Newsom said in a post on X. “They are on their way there now.”

Newsom’s post followed a ruling by a federal judge late on Saturday that temporarily blocked Trump from deploying 200 Oregon National Guard troops to the city of Portland.

The judge blocked Trump from sending the troops until at least October 18, citing a lack of evidence that recent protests necessitated the move.

“This is a breathtaking abuse of the law and power. The Trump Administration is unapologetically attacking the rule of law itself,” Newsom said in a separate statement.

The governor said Trump put the 300 California troops under federal control months ago to respond to protests in Los Angeles. The original circumstances did not warrant the move and had since subsidied, Newsom said.
