Coastal Carolina athletic director Chance Miller was issued a public reprimand by the NCAA Division I Baseball Committee on Friday for misconduct after Game 2 of the College World Series in June.
Miller was cited for berating the NCAA national coordinator of umpires at Charles Schwab Field in Omaha, Neb., after Miller was apparently frustrated by an umpire’s decision to eject Coastal Carolina coach Kevin Schnall and assistant Matt Schilling in the first inning of what was ultimately a 5-3 loss to LSU on June 22.
Schnall was ejected for what the NCAA said was arguing balls and strikes. He had been given a warning before the ejection but instead went onto the field to continue arguing.
“The NCAA Division I Baseball Committee strongly believes this type of behavior is unacceptable and has no place at any NCAA championship event,” said Jay Artigues, committee chair and director of athletics at Southeastern Louisiana, of Miller’s actions. “As an athletics director, Mr. Miller is expected to uphold the highest standards of conduct, and his actions fell well short of that expectation.”
As a consequence, Miller will not be allowed to attend the first game of the next NCAA baseball regional his team participates in.
