MLB roundup: Rockies’ Jake McCarthy joins Shohei Ohtani in elite club

Jake McCarthy went 4-for-5 with two home runs, three RBIs and four runs to help the visiting Colorado Rockies break a four-game losing streak Saturday with an 8-5 victory against the St. Louis Cardinals on Saturday night.

McCarthy is only the second player in the live-ball era (since 1920) to fill a box score with at least four runs, four hits, three RBIs, two homers and two stolen bases in one game. Los Angeles Dodgers superstar Shohei Ohtani achieved the feat against the Miami Marlins on Sept. 19, 2024.

Both of McCarthy’s home runs came on the first pitch of his at-bats, including a leadoff blast on the game’s first pitch against left-hander Matthew Liberatore (5-9). Building on a two-run lead in the sixth, McCarthy added a two-run shot in the sixth against right-hander Luis Gastelum.

Home Run Derby champ Jordan Walker broke a 22-game homerless drought, going deep against left-hander Brennan Bernardino with a 432-foot solo blast to left in the eighth, his 23rd of the season and first since July 9.

Dodgers 2, Diamondbacks 1 (10 innings)

Shohei Ohtani hit a two-out infield single to drive in the winning run and Los Angeles broke a season-long seven-game losing streak with an extra-innings victory over Arizona in Phoenix.

Hunter Feduccia drew a two-out walk in the 10th off Gerardo Carrillo (2-1) and automatic runner Kyle Tucker took third when ball four was a wild pitch. Tucker then came home on the infield single which deflected off Tim Tawa’s glove. Jack Dreyer got Ryan Waldschmidt to ground into a double play with runners on first and third and one out in the bottom of the 10th to record his first save.

After the game was scoreless through seven innings, the Dodgers took a 1-0 lead in the eighth off a homer from Kyle Tucker. Geraldo Perdomo and Corbin Carroll hit back-to-back triples to open the ninth and tie the game at 1-1 off Edwin Diaz (2-1), but Diaz struck out Ildemaro Vargas with runners on second and third to send the game to extras.

Yankees 5, Braves 4

Gerrit Cole pitched seven strong innings for host New York, which hit a pair of homers and earned a victory over Atlanta and ace Chris Sale.

Aided by solo homers from George Lombard Jr. and Ben Rice, Cole (6-5) won a third consecutive start for the first time since returning from Tommy John surgery on May 22 as the Yankees won for the 16th time in 25 games. Cole also became the 13th pitcher in team history to reach 1,000 strikeouts for the Yankees.

In his first start since July 29, Sale (12-7) allowed three runs and five hits in six innings. The left-hander struck out eight and walked two in taking his first loss since June 28.

Athletics 7, Red Sox 3

Gage Jump recorded a career-high 11 strikeouts to help the visiting Athletics snap a nine-game losing skein while also ending Boston’s nine-game winning streak.

Jump (5-7) allowed two runs and six hits over his six-inning stint. Tyler Soderstrom and Henry Bolte cracked home runs while Jonah Heim and Donovan Walton drove in two runs apiece for the Athletics, who won for the second time in 14 games.

Jake Bennett (7-5) gave up four runs and five hits over 5 1/3 innings as the Red Sox lost for just the fourth time in 31 games. Jahmai Jones and Nick Sogard posted three hits apiece while Andruw Monasterio stroked a two-run single in the first to extend his hitting streak to 10 games and his on-base streak to 20.

Blue Jays 7, Phillies 5 (11 innings)

Nathan Lukes belted a two-run homer in the 11th inning to fuel visiting Toronto to a victory over Philadelphia.

Chase Shugart (2-1) retired the first two batters in the 11th before Lukes deposited a 3-2 sweeper over the wall in right-center field. The late uprising made a winner out of Louis Varland (5-4), who allowed one unearned run in two innings. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. belted a solo homer in the first and had an RBI single in the third in his return.

Toronto starter Max Scherzer struck out four to raise his career total to 3,516, moving him past Hall of Famer Walter Johnson for 10th place all-time in Major League Baseball history. Philadelphia’s Trea Turner and Bryce Harper belted back-to-back homers to highlight a four-run sixth. Phillies starter Aaron Nola reached 2,000 strikeouts for his career.

Padres 3, Astros 2

Jackson Merrill homered and knocked in two runs while Michael King sailed through six innings of one-run ball as host San Diego edged Houston and moved to one game back of Philadelphia for the final National League wild-card spot.

King (7-8) gave up only three hits and one walk while striking out six over 93 pitches. Padres closer Mason Miller allowed a run in the ninth before notching his 29th save in 30 chances.

Astros starter Peter Lambert (8-6), who yielded Merrill’s solo shot in the third inning, allowed five hits and three runs (two earned). Houston, which suffered only its fourth loss in 17 games, saw its American League West lead over the Texas Rangers trimmed to a half-game.

Royals 6, Cubs 3

Jac Caglianone went 4-for-4 with two homers and two doubles and drove in four runs as host Kansas City spoiled pitcher Clay Holmes’ debut for Chicago.

It was the third four-hit game for Caglianone, who also reached 20 homers in his first full season, to help the Royals even the three-game series. Seth Lugo (5-7) allowed three runs and five hits over six innings as Kansas City snapped the Cubs’ five-game winning streak.

Acquired from the New York Mets on Monday, Holmes (4-5) returned to action for the first time since he broke a bone in his leg on May 15 against the Yankees. Holmes gave up four runs, six hits and two walks over four innings. Ian Happ homered and doubled while Carson Kelly had a two-run double for Chicago, which lost for just the third time in 11 road games.

Marlins 7, Angels 0

Sandy Alcantara fired seven shutout innings while setting the franchise record for career innings along the way as visiting Miami handled Los Angeles.

Alcantara, who broke Ricky Nolasco’s mark of 1,226 innings by fanning Josh Lowe for the second out in the third, allowed just three hits and one walk with eight strikeouts. Xavier Edwards provided two hits and three RBIs while Otto Lopez added two hits and two RBIs.

Angels rookie Walbert Urena (7-8) lasted a career-low 2 1/3 innings as he surrendered four runs, four hits and three walks. Wade Meckler (2-for-4) posted the team’s lone extra-base hit with a double in the sixth.

Pirates 9, Mets 0

Bubba Chandler tossed six scoreless innings and host Pittsburgh’s bats came alive en route to a shutout vs. New York.

Jake Mangum had three hits, including a pair of doubles, and Nick Gonzales drove in three runs to lead the Pirates, who snapped a four-game skid and the Mets’ four-game winning streak.

Mets catcher Luis Torrens pitched the seventh and eighth. Brandon Lowe smacked the third pitch Torrens threw over the right field wall for his 25th home run of the season. Lowe has hit 25 home runs in a season three times in his career. The Mets did not have a runner reach second and Pirates pitchers retired 18 of the final 19 batters they faced.

Reds 8, Nationals 2

Andres Chaparro had two hits and drove in three runs as host Washington dealt Cincinnati starter Chase Burns his first loss since April 10.

Abimelec Ortiz had a two-run single for the Nationals, who have won the first two games of the series. Clayton Beeter (5-3) pitched a scoreless eighth inning.

Burns, who was seeking to win his 13th consecutive decision, matched his season high with five earned runs allowed. He gave up six hits while walking three and striking out six. Eugenio Suarez homered in his second straight game.

Tigers 8, Giants 0

Jackson Jobe made a successful return from Tommy John surgery with five shutout innings, Eduardo Valencia contributed a sun-aided, two-RBI double to a six-run seventh and Detroit blanked host San Francisco.

Jobe (1-0), pitching at the major league level for the first time since May 28, 2025, gave up one hit and one walk with four strikeouts in a 71-pitch effort. Max Clark (two RBIs) and Javier Baez (one RBI) each had two of the Tigers’ 10 hits, running their record to 6-2 on the West Coast road trip which ends on Sunday.

The Giants were limited to two hits by Jobe and relievers Tyler Holton and Ty Madden. Landen Roupp (7-11) matched zeroes with Jobe for five innings before he walked three of the first four batters in the sixth inning to end his outing.

Brewers 4, Twins 3

Andrew Vaughn’s go-ahead RBI single with one out in the eighth inning led the host Milwaukee Brewers to a 4-3 win over the Minnesota Twins on Saturday night.

Vaughn smacked the first pitch he saw from Jeff Hoffman (6-8) the other way into right field, scoring Brandon Lockridge from second base and breaking a 3-3 deadlock. Lockridge was pinch-running for William Contreras, who led the frame off with a single.

Aaron Ashby (13-2) worked a 1-2-3 eighth. Trevor Megill needed only four pitches in the ninth to record his 21st save of the season. Brice Turang was 3-for-4 with two RBIs out of the leadoff spot for Milwaukee. For the Twins, Royce Lewis had a single, double and two RBIs.

White Sox 6, Guardians 3

Munetaka Murakami homered and Tristan Peters and Chase Meidroth each drove in two runs to lift Chicago to a victory over visiting Cleveland, snapping its four-game losing streak.

White Sox starter Anthony Kay (9-5) allowed two runs, scattered six hits, walked one and fanned four over six innings. Grant Taylor yielded one hit in a scoreless ninth to earn his sixth save for Chicago, which used a five-run sixth inning to propel its way to the win.

Rhys Hoskins was 2-of-3 with a two-run home run, Angel Genao added his first career homer and Angel Martinez had two hits for the Guardians, who saw starter Gavin Williams allow two runs on three hits over 5 2/3 innings.

Rangers 5, Orioles 1

Corey Seager hit a three-run homer and Jacob deGrom pitched five strong innings as Texas won its fourth consecutive game by beating Baltimore in Arlington, Texas.

Now 6-0 in seven career starts against the Orioles, deGrom (8-7) allowed one run on three hits with one walk and nine strikeouts. Peyton Gray, Chase Silseth and Cal Quantrill followed with a combined four scoreless innings.

Jackson Holliday broke a 0-for-18 slump with his sixth homer of the season and also doubled for Baltimore, which lost its third straight game and has scored a total of three runs during that stretch. Orioles starter Kyle Bradish (7-11) allowed two unearned runs on five hits over six innings. He struck out four with zero walks.

Marlins 7, Angels 0

Sandy Alcantara broke the franchise career record for innings pitched, leading host Miami to a win over Los Angeles.

Miami broke its four-game losing streak as Alcantara (13-6) pitched seven scoreless innings, allowing just three hits and one walk while striking out eight. The 30-year-old Dominican Republic native secured the record when he struck out Josh Lowe for the second out in the third, which moved him to 1,226 1/3 innings to break Ricky Nolasco’s mark.

Two Marlins who had been slumping over the past month — Otto Lopez and Xavier Edwards — led the offense. Lopez went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and one walk. Edwards went 2-for-4 with a double and three RBIs. Angels rookie starter Walbert Urena (7-8) lasted just 2 1/3 innings — the shortest outing of his young career. He allowed four runs on four hits and three walks.

Rays 3, Mariners 2

Richie Palacios delivered a tiebreaking two-run single with two outs in the sixth inning as Tampa Bay defeated host Seattle on the night where the franchise honored the 50 best players in its 50-year history.

Victor Mesa Jr. homered for the American League East-leading Rays, who won their fifth game in a row and for the 14th time in their last 18. Seven Tampa relievers combined to allow eight hits after scheduled starter Griffin Jax was a late scratch with right elbow discomfort.

Josh Naylor hit two solo homers and a double for the Mariners. Steven Matz (5-4) got the victory for Tampa Bay and Bryan Baker pitched the ninth for his major league-leading 34th save of the season. Mariners reliever Michael Rucker (0-3) allowed two unearned runs in the sixth after George Kirby went five innings and allowed one run on four hits.
