MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Minnesota leaders are urging protesters to remain peaceful as thousands of people converge on a Minneapolis park to protest the fatal shooting of Renee Nicole Good in the city.
There are protests across the country on Saturday follow that death and the shooting of two people in Portland, Oregon, by federal officers confronted by Anti-ice protesters while enforcing a Trump administration immigration crackdown.
Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara says a protest Friday night turned violent when people threw ice, snow, and rocks at officers.
The demonstrations come as the U.S. Department of Homeland Security pushes forward in the Twin Cities with what it calls its biggest-ever immigration enforcement operation.
Meanwhile, newly released video from an ICE officer’s perspective seems to show Renee Nicole Good accelerating her vehicle into the agent during a Minneapolis immigration enforcement operation, which would contradict claims that she was an innocent victim.
The footage seems to support law enforcement accounts that the shooting was an act of self-defense. It also counters claims by some in the media and some Democratic officials who framed the incident as murder.
Key Points:
- Video evidence seems to show Good struck the ICE agent with her car before she was shot, which would support a self-defense claim.
- Good was a known activist who had organized efforts to disrupt ICE operations, which some officials say undermines portrayals of her as a bystander.
- Critics, including Vice President JD Vance, have accused the media and Democratic leaders of misrepresenting the incident and inflaming tensions.
