MEXICO CITY (Reuters) – Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum will wait to formally recognize a winner in the U.S. presidential election until vote tallies are finalized, she said on Wednesday, after preliminary vote results overnight gave Donald Trump a victory.

Sheinbaum, who took office last month, told reporters at her regular morning press conference that she will hold off until certain U.S. states finish with their vote counts.

“There will be good relations with the United States,” she said. “I’m convinced of that.”

The leftist leader also sought to calm worries ahead of the former U.S. president’s return to power, after Mexico’s peso currency took a significant hit in overnight trading.

“There’s no reason to worry. For our compatriots, for Mexican entrepreneurs, there’s no reason to worry. Mexico always comes out ahead,” said Sheinbaum, in her first comments following the U.S. election.
