SAN JOSE/PANAMA CITY (Reuters) -An earthquake of magnitude 5.7 struck the Panama-Costa Rica border region on Monday, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) said.

The quake was at a depth of 3 km (1.9 miles), according to USGS data, and its epicenter was located about 5 km (3.1 miles) southeast of the town of Puerto Armuelles, in the Panamanian region of Chiriqui that stands in the border with Costa Rica.

Local authorities from the two Central American nations did not immediately report any damages.

“Our response units are in different parts of the province of Chiriqui conducting monitoring, after the strong seismic movement recorded in the region,” Panama’s National Civil Protection System said on X.

The Institute of Geosciences of the University of Panama registered a 5.9 magnitude aftershock, and no immediate damage was reported either.
