New York Islanders veteran forward Kyle Palmieri has a torn ACL and will be out six-to-eight months, the team announced Saturday.

Palmieri was injured while vying for a loose puck with Philadelphia Flyers defenseman Jamie Drysdale during the second period of New York’s 4-3 shootout loss on Friday. Although injured, Palmieri was able to strip the puck away from Philadelphia defenseman Emil Andrae and feed Jonathan Drouin, who ultimately set up Emil Heineman for a goal.

Palmieri was credited with an assist on the play.

Palmieri, 34, has 18 points (six goals, 12 assists) in 25 games while playing in the first season of a two-year, $9.5 million contract.

He recorded 48 points (24 goals, 24 assists) while playing in all 82 games last season.

The Smithtown, N.Y., native has 545 points (276 goals, 269 assists) in 925 career NHL games with the Anaheim Ducks, New Jersey Devils and Islanders. He was selected by the Ducks with the 26th overall pick of the 2009 NHL Draft.
