Dec 18 (Reuters) – The Infectious Diseases Society of America said on Thursday it had appointed Jeanne Marrazzo, former director of the U.S. National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, as its chief executive officer, effective January 12.

Marrazzo, a Harvard-trained infectious disease specialist, will lead the professional society at a time of heightened focus on emerging pathogens and public health preparedness.

Earlier this year, she was fired from her role at the NIAID by Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.

She had filed a whistleblower complaint in September, alleging that the federal health leadership had politicized science – citing grant cancellations, clinical trial halts, and hostility toward vaccines.

Marrazzo was later offered a position in the Indian Health Service department at the HHS, according to a source familiar with the matter.

She will succeed Chris Busky, who announced his resignation earlier this year, the IDSA said.

Marrazzo has previously served on the IDSA’s board of directors as treasurer from 2021 to 2023.
