Rafael Devers was penciled in the San Francisco Giants’ lineup at first base on Tuesday for the first time since he was acquired from the Boston Red Sox.

A third baseman by trade, Devers has taken ground balls at first base since the trade out of Boston in June. Devers reported to spring training in a testy mood after the Red Sox signed free agent third baseman Alex Bregman. Devers told the Red Sox his position was third base, but in recent interviews said he would’ve played first base in Boston if the team asked at the start of spring training.

Devers entered the game against the Atlanta Braves on Tuesday night with a .257 batting average, 17 home runs and 68 RBis in 102 total games between Boston and San Francisco. Fifteen of those home runs came in Devers’ 73 games in the Red Sox lineup.

Devers is in the third year of a 10-year, $313.5 million deal he signed with the Red Sox in 2023. A three-time All-Star, he said a disk issue is impacting his play with the Giants.

In his first 29 games with San Francisco, Devers was the designated hitter for the Giants and hit .219 with 10 RBIs.
