(Washington, DC) — Consumer confidence is down sharply this month. The Conference Board’s lead index fell more than six-and-a-half points from August. The board’s chief economist Dana Peterson said the index “deteriorated notably” in September following two months of softening. The survey noted September’s surge in gas prices and ongoing geopolitical tensions as factors in the drop in confidence across nearly all age and income groups. Consumer appraisals of business conditions also turned negative for the first time in two years.
