BEIJING (Reuters) -China has banned imports of poultry and related products from Spain over an avian influenza outbreak, China’s customs administration said in a notice dated August 7 released on its website.
Spain’s agriculture ministry said in a statement there was no effective impact from the ban because exports of poultry from Spain to China have not yet begun.
A protocol between the two countries for the export of certain poultry products including turkey and chicken feet from Spain to China was signed in April and applications by companies wishing to export were still being studied, the ministry said.
The ministry confirmed the detection of an outbreak of bird flu by Spanish authorities in the country’s northern Basque region on August 4. It said it would continue to work with the World Organisation for Animal Health to eradicate the outbreak and have restrictions lifted.
