Carles Gil’s late goal lifts Revolution over Red Bulls

Carles Gil capped a two-goal performance by converting a penalty kick in second-half stoppage time, lifting the New England Revolution to a 2-1 victory over the New York Red Bulls on Saturday afternoon in Foxborough, Mass.

VAR confirmed a penalty on New York’s Sean Nealis in the penalty area, allowing Gil to provide the late-match fireworks. The Revolution captain deposited a shot into the bottom left corner for the game-winning goal in the 97th minute.

Gil also scored in the 28th minute and Aljaz Ivacic made four saves to help the Revolution (1-3-1, 4 points) improve to 8-2-1 in their last 11 home matches against the Red Bulls.

New York’s Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting scored in first-half stoppage time. Emil Forsberg notched an assist on the heels of his two-goal performance in the Red Bulls’ 2-1 victory over Toronto FC last weekend.

Peter Stroud also had an assist and Carlos Coronel finished with four saves for the Red Bulls (2-2-2; 8 points), who saw their four-match unbeaten streak come to a halt (2-0-2).

The MLS rivals were meeting for 100th time across all competitions.

Stationed well outside the box, Gil deposited a free kick into the top left corner of the net to open the scoring. Gil’s tally was the team’s first that wasn’t an own goal by the opponent.

The lead held up until first-half stoppage time. Forsberg fed Stroud, who neatly slid a centering feed to the middle of the box that Choupo-Moting converted. The goal was Choupo-Moting’s second in his last three matches.

New York’s Mohammed Sofo’s shot from the left side of the box sailed wide of the goal in the 85th minute.

Red Bulls teammate Serge Ngoma’s attempt two minutes later from outside the box sailed just wide of the far post.

New York midfielder Felipe Carballo sat out on Saturday after he picked up a late red card in his team’s last match.
