The St. Louis Cardinals will shut down shortstop Masyn Winn for the remainder of the season, manager Oliver Marmol said following the team’s 8-2 road loss to the Milwaukee Brewers on Friday.
Winn, who already was expected to undergo arthroscopic surgery in the offseason to repair a torn right meniscus, was a late scratch.
“We took him out of the lineup today and had a really good conversation with him,” Marmol said. “We’re going to go ahead and call it a year and put him on the IL.”
The 23-year-old Winn, who last played on Monday, originally was expected to return for the remainder of the season. The Cardinals have 14 games remaining.
“His hope at the end of the day was to get back home and play in front of the home fans one more time,” Marmol said. “He was really aiming for that and we trying, if possible, to get him there. But, it’s just not recovering the same way it was recovering earlier on in the month.”
Winn hit .253 with nine homers and 51 RBIs in 129 games this season. He has committed just three errors all season, and his .994 fielding percentage leads all major league shortstops.
