————————–
VERBATIM: The Commerce Department had previously estimated that the gross domestic product advanced at a 1.3% rate last quarter. Consumer spending grew just 1.5%, down from an initial estimate of 2% in a sign that high interest rates may be taking a toll on the economy. Still, the report showed that the January-to-March slowdown was caused mainly by two factors…a surge in imports and a drop in business inventories.
Southwest Airlines projects weak pricing power in Q2
Southwest Airlines says a key revenue ratio will be weaker than expected in the second quarter because of changes in how consumers book travel. That’s not good news for Southwest, which is already under pressure from a hedge fund to make big changes, including getting rid of the CEO. Southwest says second-quarter revenue will rise as it adds more flights. But on a per mile basis, revenue will decline more than Southwest previously thought. That’s a sign of weak pricing power.

TAG: Correspondent Jeremy House reporting. In Poland, gold’s allure is intertwined with the enduring trauma of World War II, when having gold could ensure survival.
————————–
VERBATIM: While the war is far to the east, gold investors feel the precious metal offers them safety at a time of instability. The demand peaked first during the COVID-19 pandemic, and then when Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022. Now, more than two years into the war, the demand for gold remains steady.

———————————
VERBATIM: The five-day strike by junior doctors in the early years of their careers comes just a week before the U.K. general election and shines a spotlight on the troubles besetting the National Health Service. Waiting lists for patients are at record highs. Polls show that the woeful state of public health is a top concern for voters.

All eyes are on Nvidia’s stock, so what’s been going on?
( ) -q-28- UNDATED (Correspondent Jeremy House) “a minor slump.”

——————————-
VERBATIM: Early last week, Nvidia overtook Microsoft as Wall Street’s most valuable public company. Then it fell 13% over three days, its worst such stretch since 2022. Any stock that climbs as much as Nvidia has _ up more than 1,000% since the autumn of 2022 _ is vulnerable to some of its investors selling shares in order to lock in some profits. That earlier run makes a 13% drop over three days look like a minor slump.

The European Commission said it’s concerned the U.S. tech giant has been “restricting competition” by bundling Teams with its core office productivity applications such as Office 365 and Microsoft 365. The commission said it suspects Microsoft might have granted Teams a “distribution advantage.”

TAG: Correspondent Jeremy House reporting. Farmers and the ethanol industry see the pipeline as a way to support new aviation fuel markets. Many landowners are opposed because they fear the taking of their land or a pipeline rupture releasing dangerous CO2 gas.
——————————
VERBATIM: Regulators have approved Summit Carbon Solutions’ application for a permit to build and operate its pipeline. The $5.5 billion, 2,500-mile pipeline network would carry CO2 emissions from dozens of ethanol plants to be buried deep underground in North Dakota. But the project faces setbacks in other states and landowners around the Midwest.
