Bible-readers are better citizens

VERBATIM:  According to a new poll released by the American Bible Society, people who read the scriptures on a regular basis are also more likely to put a high premium on civic engagement.  Bible-readers pay more attention to the political life of the nation than their non-reading peers and they are better educated on the key issues before the country, the state and their locality.  Those who engage with scripture regularly are also more likely to be civically active.  Michael Harrington, SRN News.

Most Americans want abortion pills

VERBATIM:  According to a poll from the Public Religion Research Institute, 68% of respondents believe that doctors should be able to send abortion drugs to women through the mail.  Democrats and Independents are most likely to support through-the-mail abortion but even amongst Republicans, 54% are in favor.  All major religious groups also approve of abortion pills in the mail, with the exception of White Evangelicals.  MH SRN NEWS.

VERBATIM:  A surge in natural disasters is putting a lot of financial pressure on firms that insure the nation’s houses of worship and some are opting to cancel policies.  Baptist Press reports that congregations in Texas are especially vulnerable to being dropped after a series of storms, floods and freezes.  Many insurance companies are also still trying to recover from the pandemic, which forced them to make big payouts and taxed resources.  MH SRN NEWS.

VERBATIM:  A new poll from the Barna Group reveals that strong majorities of believers think that Artificial Intelligence is inferior to human beings when it comes to important aspects of religious life.  86% don’t want AI performing spiritual counseling.  About two-thirds of respondents also think their pastor should avoid AI when developing and writing his sermons.  Christians are more open to AI helping with things like financial planning.  MH SRN NEWS.

VERBATIM:  John Kluge is a high school music teacher who won’t refer to boys as girls and girls as boys because of his Christian faith.  At first Brownsburg High School accommodate him — then it reversed itself, telling Kluge he would have to embrace transgenderism or lose his job.  He quit and filed suit, now standing before the 7th US Circuit Court of Appeals.  America’s courts are beginning to fill up with similar cases.  Michael Harrington, SRN News.

VERBATIM:  That’s the issue that most Americans believe the two parties are the farthest apart on.  A new poll from the Pew Research Center finds 42% of respondents say there is NO common ground between Republicans and Democrats on abortion.  Another 38% say there might be a little room for compromise but not much.  Amongst registered voters both Republicans and Democrats agree that there is virtually NO common ground on abortion.

VERBATIM:  The denomination’s leadership has approved two new proposals:  One will add sexual orientation and so-called “gender identity” to the organization’s anti-discrimination policy.  The SECOND and more controversial proposal, will require that future candidates for ordination be quizzed about their support for the LGBT lifestyle.  Suggesting that a conservative response might be disqualifying.  The two measures will now go to the individual presbyteries for a vote.

VERBATIM:  Texas has a law that requires Porn Hub and other on-line porn sites to verify that a person is 18 or older before allowing them to enter the site.  Porn Hub says that’s a violation of free speech and now the Supreme Court has decided to hear the case.  Earlier this year, a panel of the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled in favor of the Texas law.  Critics say pornographers are fighting the statute because it cuts into their profits.  Michael Harrington, SRN News.

VERBATIM:  Lawmakers in Nassau have approved a ban of males competing against females in sports at all facilities in the county.  The locality is one of the richest in the nation and voted for President Biden in 2020, but concern over injuries to girls forced to play sports against boys has been growing there.  One Democratic lawmaker compared the Nassau ban on males in female sports to what the Nazis did to Jews during the Holocaust.  Michael Harrington, SRN News.
