A victory for religious freedom in Hawaii

VERBATIM:  A U.S. district court says public schools in the state MUST allow Christian clubs to operate on campus just like any other formally sanctioned organization.  Child Evangelism Fellowship sued when the Hawaii Department of Education barred after school Bible clubs over church-state separation concerns.  The Supreme Court has ruled that schools cannot discriminate based on religious affiliation.  Michael Harrington, SRN News.

VERBATIM:  Five women who work at Darlington Memorial Hospital say they are being forced to share a changing room with a man who is living as a woman.  They have filed suit against Britain’s national healthcare system for sexual harrassment and sex discrimination.  The nurses say when they complained about having to change in the presence of a man, their supervisors told them to “broaden their mindset” and be more inclusive.  Michael Harrington, SRN News.

VERBATIM:  Lawmakers in Nassau have approved a ban of males competing against females in sports at all facilities in the county.  The locality is one of the richest in the nation and voted for President Biden in 2020, but concern over injuries to girls forced to play sports against boys has been growing there.  One Democratic lawmaker compared the Nassau ban on males in female sports to what the Nazis did to Jews during the Holocaust.  Michael Harrington, SRN News.

VERBATIM:  Jews for Jesus reports a spike in the number of people from Israel requesting copies of the New Testament in the wake of last fall’s devastating terrorist attacks by Hamas.  Jews for Jesus Executive Director Aaron Abramson tells the Christian Post that the attacks rattled a lot of Israelis, making them ask bigger questions about life and spirituality.  Jews for Jesus has offices in Israel and has been providing relief for the victims of Hamas.  Michael Harrington, SRN News.

The Far East is a growing mission field

VERBATIM:  According to a new poll from the Pew Research Center, millions of people in that region have given up on religion entirely.  61% of people in Hong Kong, 52% in South Korea, 48% in Vietnam and 42% in Japan all say they follow no particular faith.  Those who DO believe in something in those countries are Bhuddists.  There is a growing Christian population in China but it still represents a small minority of the vast population.  Michael Harrington, SRN News.

VERBATIM:  Lawmakers are considering legislation that has stirred much controversy due to its vague wording.  One part of the proposed legislation makes it an offense to “possess materials that could incite hatred” — with a five year prison term to be levied against violators.  Some critics say that could make possession of a Bible against the law.  Scotland recently sparked an uproar with its own hate crimes statute.  Michael Harrington, SRN News.

An Oregon high school coach loses his job

VERBATIM:  John Parks says he was fired from his post as Track and Field coach at Lake Oswego High after protesting the state’s practice of allowing males to compete against females.  Parks tells KATU-TV he suggested that an open category be established just for transgender athletes.  Shortly thereafter he was let go by the school.  The coach says he will appeal his dismissal, adding that he is fighting for the integrity of girls’ sports.  Michael Harrington, SRN News.

VERBATIM:  A new Gallup poll finds that most people have no problem with the in vitro fertilization process.  82% say it is morally acceptable versus 10% who say it is not.  On the more grave question of what happens to unused embryos, however, Americans are split.  49% say it is morally acceptable to destroy those embryos that are not being implanted while 43% say no — it’s morally wrong.  Michael Harrington, SRN News.

Abortion is down in South Carolina

VERBATIM:  State officials say they were averaging over 900 abortions per month before a heartbeat law went into effect.  Now the total is less than 200 — a decline of 80%.  The South Carolina law bans abortion as soon as an unborn baby’s heartbeat can be detected — usually at about six weeks of pregnancy.  In fact, most states that have instituted strict limits on abortion have seen a lot less of them.  Michael Harrington, SRN News.

VERBATIM:  One million dollars of taxpayer money is going into a campaign to convince women NOT to visit the clinics.  The Massachusetts Department of Public Health says pro-life pregnancy centers use deceptive practices because they do not provide abortions.  A series of ads bearing that message will soon appear on social media, radio, tv and on billboards in Massachusetts.  The ads were written by a private pro-abortion group.  Michael Harrington, SRN News.

Jack Philips is back in court

VERBATIM:  The Colorado cake baker is now being sued by a man who is living as a woman, who is trying to force Philips to make a cake celebrating his transgenderism.  Philips, a Christian, says he can’t do it and now the Colorado Supreme Court must decide if he’s in violation of anti-discrimination law.  Philips already won a U.S. Supreme Court victory over a homosexual who wanted a gay cake, but his enemies keep suing him.  Michael Harrington, SRN News.

Walmart goes all-in on Gay Pride

VERBATIM:  The massive retailer is heavily promoting its LGBT items to celebrate June as Gay Pride Month.  The Walmart website features hundreds of individual LGBT products, including a t-shirt that reads “Some people are gay.  Get over it.”  The retailer has also released an ad featuring a number of homosexual designers.  The American Family Association is urging Christians to sign a petition asking Walmart to stop promoting Pride.  Micheal Harrington, SRN News.

VERBATIM:  National elections take place in the United Kingdom in about three weeks and the Marriage Foundation is urging the candidates to say something about the decline of matrimony in the country.  Less than half of all adults in the U.K. get married these days and the social consequences are piling up.  The Foundation says political parties should make marriage promotion part of their platforms and talk about it on the stump.  Michael Harrington, SRN News.

VERBATIM:  Lawmakers have passed a buffer zone law that will ban demonstrations — including silent prayer — within one city block of all abortion clinics. Scottish pro-lifers say the new law is a violation of civil liberties and criminalizes dissent.  Buffer zones have been tried in the U.S and mostly struck down by the courts, but this country has stronger religious freedom and free speech laws than does Scotland.  Michael Harrington, SRN News.

America’s largest Protestant denomination leaves the door open for female pastors.
VERBATIM:  The Southern Baptist Convention forbids women in the clergy as a practice but it’s not officially part of the organization’s constitution.  And it still isn’t as delegates the summer convention have failed to pass a measure that would have permanently banned women from being pastors.  The vote fell about five percent short of the two-thirds majority needed to amend the SBC’s constitution.  Michael Harrington, SRN News.

The Southern Baptist Convention takes a stand against IVF.
VERBATIM:  The denomination’s leadership had already condemned the fertility procedure but now it’s official.  SBC delegates have adopted a resolution counseling Christians against using in vitro fertilization and urging them to instead adopt frozen embryos.  Pro-life activists have long warned that the IVF procedure often includes the creation of multiple embryos — many of which are destroyed while others are implanted.

Two missionaries are honored
VERBATIM:  Davy Lloyd and his wife Natalie were working at a mission in Haiti earlier this year when they were murdered by one of the country’s numerous gangs.  Now their alma mater, Ozark Bible Institiute and College, has announced a scholarship in the couple’s name.  The school says “This scholarship is an effort to encourage future generations to follow Davy and Natalie’s example by devoting their lives to Christian missions.”  Michael Harrington, SRN News.

VERBATIM:  A spokesman for his campaign tells NBC News that Mr. Biden and his surrogates plan to appear at more than 200 Gay Pride events in the month of June.  The blitz is aimed at getting homosexuals excited about voting for the president in November, as they did in 2020.  Polls indicate that Mr. Biden has been losing ground with some of his key constituencies, including women, minorities and members of the LGBT community.  Michael Harrington, SRN News.

VERBATIM:  That seems like a given but the Pew Research Center wanted to prove it and has just released a poll on the matter.  Can a person change their gender?  59% of Biden supporters say YES versus only 9 percent of Trump supporters.  And just 19% of people who plan to vote for Biden think the country is better off when people prioritize marriage and children versus 59% of Trump voters who believe that.  Michael Harrington, SRN News.

Hate crimes charges are dropped against a Christian in Iowa. 
VERBATIM:  Last Christmas an image of Satan was set up at the State Capitol by the Satanic Temple, prompting Michael Cassidy to enter the building and knock it down.  He was arrested and prosecutors decided to charge him with a hate crime against Satanism, to the surprise of many.  The hate crimes charge, which carries heavier penalties, has now been dropped in return for Cassidy’s decision to plead guilty to a third-degree criminal mischief.

A drag performance took place at the Vatican’s new event for kids this month.
VERBATIM:  Pope Francis inaugurated the first-ever World Children’s Day festival in Rome.  It’s unclear if he was aware that amongst the entertainment options for small children was a drag show.  Youtube video shows a large group of kids at the festival venue watching a man in a dress and women’s make-up dance for them.  The Pope has already sparked division in the Catholic church by allowing priest to bless same-sex civil unions.

The Southern Baptist Convention is coming to Indianapolis.
VERBATIM:  The country’s largest Protestant denomination will hold its annual summer convention June 9th through the 12th in the state capital.  The theme of this year’s event is “One Mind, One Voice” based on Romans 15 verses five and six.  The SBC continues to seek gradual decline in overall membership — as most denominations are — but involvement by individuals in their local churches is actually intensifying.

Finally, some good news from Nigeria. 
 VERBATIM:  The army has rescued about 350 people kidnapped by the Muslim terror group Boko Haram.  Most of the victims are women and children and a lot of them are Christians.  Boko Haram and other Muslim terrorists have been wreaking havoc in Nigeria for decades, killing tens-of-thousands of Christians as they seek to establish Sharia Law in the country.  The government has been largely unable or unwilling to address the problem.

Peru takes a stand on transgenderism. 
VERBATIM:  If you are a man and believe that you are actually a woman, or a woman who believes she is actually a man, you are suffering from mental illness.  That is what the government of Peru maintains and President Dina Boularte has made it official, signing a degree that classifies transgenderism as a form of mental illness.  LGBT groups at the national and international level are attacking, suggesting that Peru should be the target of sanctions.
