A Colorado congregation wins in court. 
VERBATIM:  The Rock Church in the city of Castle Rock has been housing homeless people in recreational vehicles on its property.  City officials say that’s a violation of zoning laws, but a federal judge has issued a preliminary injunction in favor of the congregation. The judge has he agrees with the church’s argument that by preventing it from allowing the homeless to live on its property, the Town is precluding the Church from exercising its religious beliefs.

VERBATIM:  It’s called the “Comeback California Tour” and it’s being organized by Calvary Chapel Chino Hills, pastored by Jack Hibbs.  It will consist of a series of events designed to teach other churches how they can get believers to the polls in November.  Calvary Chapel’s website says ““California is at a crossroads, urgently needing the Church’s influence to reverse the moral decline and stand in the gap for our children, families and communities.”

An atheist group goes after a post office. 
VERBATIM:  The Freedom From Religion Foundation says it succeeded in getting postal workers at an office in Aurora, Illinois to remove a tiny cross that was just visible at the back of a customer counter.  The Foundation sent a threatening letter to the post office stating that the presence of the small cross was a violation of the so-called separation of church and state.  The group’s primary activity is seeking to scour the public square of any symbols of Christianity.

VERBATIM:  The US Commission on International Freedom is urging the State Department to designate the mostly-Muslim nation as a “country of particular concern”.  Pakistan has some of the most draconian blasphemy laws on earth and they are directed at Christians almost all of the time.  Believers can be executed for saying or doing anything that is seen as insulting to Islam and accusations are often made with no evidence.

Voters in Kentucky will consider school choice

VERBATIM:  An amendment will be on the November ballot in the state that would allow lawmakers to provide public money to private educational institutions, including Christian schools.  What might result is a voucher program that would allow parents to take their kids out of public schools and then receive money to defray the cost of private education. Millions of moms and dads across the country are expressing dissatisfaction with their local schools.  MH SRN NEWS.

VERBATIM:  After Dr. Allan Josephson stated that he doesn’t think sex-change operations on children are a good idea, the University of Louisville fired him.  Josephson is a distinguished child psychiatrist who had led the university’s Division of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and Psychology since 2003.  He has filed suit against the school with the help of Alliance Defending Freedom and his case is now before the 6th US Circuit court of Appeals in Cincinnati.  MH SRN NEWS.

VERBATIM:  The French Bible Society will hand out copies of the scriptures as millions of athletes and spectators gather in Paris for the Summer Games.  140,000 copies of the New Testament in French and another 60,000 in English will be given away during the two-week Olympiad and other Christian ministries are teaming up with the FBS to help out.  About 11 million people are expected in Paris for the Olympics and Paralympics.  MH SRN NEWS.

VERBATIM:  A lot of people were shocked to discover this month that anti-terrorist training used by the service included slides that identified the National Right to Life and other pro-life organizations as potential domestic terrorist threats.  The Army has since apologized and abandoned that training regimen but a congressional investigation has revealed that the training had been used for at least seven years before somebody finally blew the whistle.  MH SRN NEWS.

VERBATIM:  After a fire gutted the historic sanctuary of First Baptist Church of Dallas last week, Pastor Robert Jeffress says the former president sent him a note expressing his condolences and offering to help “in any way he could”.  Jeffress has been a supporter of Mr. Trump since before he won the White House in 2016 and the former president spoke at the Dallas church in 2021.  The damaged sanctuary, which is over a century old, will be demolished.  MH SRN NEWS.

VERBATIM:  Hurricane Beryl slammed the state with strong winds, heavy rains and storm surge leaving many people without homes.  Amongst the ministries that have responded are Texans On Mission, which has provided more than 60,000 meals to victims and has begun cleaning up debris.  Spokesman David Wells says “This relief effort is a powerful picture of what it looks like when the body of Christ works together in His name.”  Michael Harrington, SRN News.

VERBATIM:  According to a new poll released by the American Bible Society, people who read the scriptures on a regular basis are also more likely to put a high premium on civic engagement.  Bible-readers pay more attention to the political life of the nation than their non-reading peers and they are better educated on the key issues before the country, the state and their locality.  Those who engage with scripture regularly are also more likely to be civically active.  Michael Harrington, SRN News.

VERBATIM:  According to a poll from the Public Religion Research Institute, 68% of respondents believe that doctors should be able to send abortion drugs to women through the mail.  Democrats and Independents are most likely to support through-the-mail abortion but even amongst Republicans, 54% are in favor.  All major religious groups also approve of abortion pills in the mail, with the exception of White Evangelicals.  MH SRN NEWS.

VERBATIM:  A surge in natural disasters is putting a lot of financial pressure on firms that insure the nation’s houses of worship and some are opting to cancel policies.  Baptist Press reports that congregations in Texas are especially vulnerable to being dropped after a series of storms, floods and freezes.  Many insurance companies are also still trying to recover from the pandemic, which forced them to make big payouts and taxed resources.  MH SRN NEWS.

VERBATIM:  A new poll from the Barna Group reveals that strong majorities of believers think that Artificial Intelligence is inferior to human beings when it comes to important aspects of religious life.  86% don’t want AI performing spiritual counseling.  About two-thirds of respondents also think their pastor should avoid AI when developing and writing his sermons.  Christians are more open to AI helping with things like financial planning.  MH SRN NEWS.

VERBATIM:  The denomination’s leadership has approved two new proposals:  One will add sexual orientation and so-called “gender identity” to the organization’s anti-discrimination policy.  The SECOND and more controversial proposal, will require that future candidates for ordination be quizzed about their support for the LGBT lifestyle.  Suggesting that a conservative response might be disqualifying.  The two measures will now go to the individual presbyteries for a vote.
