Virginia’s governor deploys soldiers to U.S.-Mexico border

Virginia’s Glenn Youngkin is joining the list of Republican governors sending soldiers or other state law enforcement officers to the U.S. border with Mexico. Youngkin announced that he’s responding to a request from Texas Gov. Greg Abbott. The executive order directs the deployment of 100 Virginia National Guard soldiers and 21 support personnel to the southern border. Youngkin says “leadership solutions” at the federal level are falling short, leaving states to fill in the void. Virginia Democrats are criticizing the move as an abuse of state resources.

Former first lady Rosalynn Carter has dementia

The wife of former President Jimmy Carter has been diagnosed with dementia. A statement from the Carter Center says Rosalyn Carter “continues to live happily at home with her husband, enjoying spring in Plains, [Georgia] and visits with loved ones.” The former first lady is 95 years old. In February, the family announced that Jimmy Carter was receiving hospice care. The Carters have been married more than 76 years and are the longest married presidential couple in American history.

Biden, McCarthy appeal to lawmakers to support debt deal

The stakes remain high for both President Biden and House Speaker McCarthy after striking a budget deal to avert a default. They may have reached a bipartisan agreement, but hard work remains for both the president and House speaker. They each have to persuade lawmakers in their parties to vote for it — in both the House and the Senate. Some lawmakers on the far right and far left don’t like the compromise and won’t support it, so the deal will require votes from Democrats and Republicans for approval.

At the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, the president laid a wreath and observed a moment of silence. Support from both parties will be needed to win congressional approval before a projected June 5th government default on U-S debts.

President Biden is hailing the budget and debt ceiling agreement as “good news for the American people.” With time running out before a possible government default, the president and House Speaker McCarthy reached a final agreement. Both the speaker and the president acknowledged that both political parties made compromises. The bill now moves to the full Congress and must be passed by June 5th to avert a first-ever default.

Biden judicial nominee withdraws from consideration

For the second time in two weeks, a Biden judicial nominee has withdrawn from consideration. Federal prosecutor Jabari Wamble has withdrawn his name from consideration after waiting nearly two years for action on his nomination. He had been nominated to be a U-S district judge in Kansas. He’s the second Biden judicial nominee to withdraw this month. The White House called Wamble “deeply qualified,” but one official familiar with the confirmation process said he was expected to receive a “not qualified” designation from the American Bar Association.

Gov. DeSantis to officially enter 2024 presidential race

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis is officially entering the 2024 presidential race. After months of speculation, DeSantis will announce he’s seeking the Republican presidential nomination. And he plans to make the announcement on Twitter during a discussion with CEO Elon Musk. Most polls show the Florida governor in second place behind former President Trump. DeSantis has endeared himself to many conservatives with an agenda focused on cultural issues and he’ll be campaigning to “make America like Florida.”

The White House describes the ongoing debt ceiling talks as “productive.” Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said White House and congressional negotiators continue to hold talks and President Biden remains hopeful a deal can be reached to avert a default. Asked about House Republican claims that the president isn’t treating the debt ceiling crisis with urgency, Jean-Pierre called that “ridiculous.”

Trump’s criminal trial set for March 2024 during primary season

Donald Trump’s criminal trial has been set for next March in the midst of the presidential primary season. During a video appearance in a New York courtroom, the former president was informed that his criminal trial will begin March 25th. The judge advised him to cancel all other obligations for the duration of the trial, which could last for several weeks. That date falls in the heat of the presidential primary season. Last month, Trump pleaded not guilty to 34 felony counts of falsifying business records at his family company, the Trump Organization.

Man arrested after crashing truck near White House

Police have arrested a Missouri man they believe intentionally crashed a truck into a security barrier near the White House. The incident took place Monday night around 10pm when a U-Haul truck smashed into a security barrier near the north side of Lafayette Square, which is across the street from the White House. A Secret Service spokesman identified the driver as a 19-year-old from the St. Louis suburb of Chesterfield. The U.S. Park Police said the man was arrested on multiple charges, including threatening to kill, kidnap or inflict harm on a president, vice president or member of their family; assault with a dangerous weapon; reckless driving; destruction of federal property; and trespassing.

President Biden and House Speaker McCarthy described their latest round of debt limit talks as “productive,” but there’s still no deal. The two leaders met in the Oval Office for 90 minutes in search of a budget agreement in order to raise the debt ceiling. Both sides described Monday evening’s talks as “productive,” but neither side appeared to be budging much ahead of a looming default deadline. With time growing short, the president and speaker agreed to continue discussing “the path forward.”

GOP Senator Tim Scott of South Carolina has formally launched his presidential campaign. Scott kicked off his 2024 White House bid in his hometown of North Charleston on the campus of his Baptist alma mater, Charleston Southern University. He repeatedly mentioned his Christian faith as he offered a message of optimism and compassion. Scott didn’t mention Donald Trump or fellow GOP candidates by name, but said the Republican party must choose between “victimhood and victory…grievance or greatness.” On Tuesday, the senator begins a two-day campaign swing to Iowa and New Hampshire.

Republican Senator Tim Scott formally is launching his 2024 presidential campaign. Scott is the Senate’s only Black Republican and he’s been promoting an optimistic vision of America’s future, as well as conservative ideas. The 57-year-old senator is deeply religious and has scheduled a formal announcement at Charleston Southern University, a Baptist school where he attended. Scott already has scheduled TV ads to begin airing in the early voting states of Iowa and New Hampshire this week.

Biden, McCarthy to resume debt limit talks at White House

President Biden and House Speaker McCarthy will resume debt ceiling talks on Monday. After cutting short his foreign trip, the president will meet in person at the White House with McCarthy in search of a deal to avert a federal default. The two leaders spoke by phone Sunday afternoon as the president was returning home on Air Force One from Japan. The speaker described the call as “productive.” They face an upcoming deadline when the government could run out of cash to pay its bills. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen says June 1st is a “hard deadline.”

The field of Republican presidential contenders is about to get bigger this week. Senator Tim Scott of South Carolina made it official Friday when he filed paperwork with the Federal Election Commission. He has scheduled a formal announcement on Monday at the private Baptist college where he attended. Meanwhile, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis is close to formally launching his 2024 White House bid. An announcement could come on Wednesday in Miami. There are a few more Republicans still considering whether or not to enter the race.

Majority of Americans disapprove of Biden’s job performance

President Biden’s job approval rating continues to lag as the 2024 campaign heats up. According to the RealClearPolitics average of polls, 41 percent of Americans approve of Joe Biden’s job performance while 54 percent disapprove. That reflects a series of recent surveys showing low approval ratings fueled by unhappiness over the president’s handling of the economy. Recent polls also have shown little enthusiasm for Joe Biden’s decision to run for re-election.

The talks between Republican and White House negotiators were halted on Friday, just hours after the Biden administration had claimed “steady progress.” House Speaker Kevin McCarthy said there wasn’t any movement by the White House, so they paused negotiations. A White House official acknowledged there are “real differences” as the two sides race to reach a deal that would raise the debt ceiling in hopes of preventing a government default.

President Biden checked in with his negotiating team from Japan for an update on efforts to raise the nation’s debt ceiling. His aides told him they’ve made “steady progress.” A senior White House official says “the president directed his team to continue pressing forward for a bipartisan agreement and made clear the need to protect essential programs for hard working Americans.” The official said Mr. Biden “remains confident that Congress will take necessary action to avoid default.”

Biden to visit Japan, but cancels Australia on upcoming trip

President Biden is leaving for Japan, but he’s cutting short his week-long foreign trip. After he attends the G-7 summit in Tokyo, the president had been scheduled to travel on to Papua New Guinea to meet with Pacific Island leaders, and then to Australia for a meeting of the leaders of the Quad partnership. But those last two legs of the trip have been canceled so that Mr. Biden can return to Washington for talks with Congress on raising the debt ceiling.

President Biden and congressional leaders are pledging to keep searching for a resolution to their debt limit standoff. There was no breakthrough in the latest Oval Office talks between the president and House Speaker McCarthy. However, both sides have agreed to keep talking. McCarthy emerged from the White House meeting and said a deal is still possible by the end of the week. However, the president will cut short his foreign trip to return to Washington this weekend for more discussions ahead of an early June deadline to avert a default.
