Trump immunity decision expected from the Supreme Court
President Biden is facing a growing chorus of calls to step aside — calls from some of his biggest fans. The list is a long one and it includes op-ed writers, pundits, and organizations that like and support Joe Biden. But after last week’s struggling debate performance by the president, even his biggest fans say it’s time for a change on the Democratic ticket. The calls for him to withdraw from the race have appeared in articles and columns in The Atlantic, from Biden’s biographer and some of his former White House staffers, and from The New York Times Editorial Board. So far, the president’s campaign is resisting those calls. GC, Wash.

With many Democrats rattled by the president’s troubling debate performance Thursday night, Joe Biden is trying to reassure donors that he’s fully up to the challenge of beating Donald Trump. Both he and the first lady are making the case to press forward with the presidential campaign despite calls for him to step aside.
Listen DownloadSupreme Court to issue Trump immunity ruling this week
The Supreme Court will issue its ruling tomorrow [MON] on the Trump immunity case. It’s perhaps the most anticipated decision of the court term — whether former presidents are immune from prosecution for official acts they took in office. The high court has previously ruled that former presidents can’t be sued in civil cases for what they did in office, but it has never weighed in on criminal immunity. At stake is the criminal case against Donald Trump for his role in the January 6th U-S Capitol riot.

On the debate stage here in Atlanta, Mr. Biden ‘s performance was marked by repeated stumbles and awkward moments of silence. Presidential debate featured sparring on every issue
The presidential debate in Atlanta offered sharply opposing views on every issue. Trump repeatedly pointed to immigration and border chaos, which Biden struggled to defend. And the two candidates hurled personal insults at each other. Presidential debate taking place in key battleground
This week’s presidential debate is taking place in one of the 2020 election’s biggest battleground states. The two candidates will face off here in Georgia, which Joe Biden narrowly won four years ago by fewer than 12-thousand votes. It was the first presidential victory by a Democrat in this state in nearly three decades. And it’s expected to be another hard-fought battleground this November. Ahead of the debate, Trump holds a five-point leader over the president in a poll from the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
Listen DownloadVoters give Trump the edge on economy, Biden on democracy
Americans have mixed views on Joe Biden and Donald Trump’s approach to some of the country’s most pressing issues. A new Reuters/Ipsos poll found that voters see Trump as the better candidate for the economy, but prefer President Biden for the preservation of democracy. Stubborn inflation has been a lingering problem for the president, which has kept his approval rating in the 30’s. Trump also holds a 13-point advantage on the topic of immigration. However, Mr. Biden has more voter support when it comes to responding to political extremism and threats to democracy.
Listen DownloadBiden administration to appeal student loan court rulings
The Biden administration is going to appear to court rulings striking down the president’s student loan repayment plan. Federal judges in Kansas and Missouri this week blocked much of a Biden administration student loan repayment plan. The SAVE program provides a faster path to cancellation and lower monthly payments for millions of borrowers. The judges’ rulings prevent an Education Department rule set to go into effect July 1. A White House spokesperson says the Justice Department will appeal both decisions and the administration “will never stop fighting to lower monthly payments and help borrowers” pay off student debt.
Listen DownloadJudge modifies Trump’s gag order ahead of debate
A judge has altered Donald Trump’s gag order, letting him talk about witnesses and the jury in this New York criminal case. Just ahead of this week’s presidential debate, Manhattan Judge Juan Marchan cleared the way for Trump to comment publicly about witnesses and jurors in his criminal trial that led to his felony conviction. In his ruling, the judge wrote that the gag order was meant to “protect the integrity of the judicial proceedings,” but now that the trial is over those protections are no longer necessary. However, the former president is still barred from talking about court staffers, the prosecution team and their families until he is sentenced next month.
Listen DownloadPotential Trump VP pick supports Biden-backed CO2 pipeline
A potential Trump vice presidential pick supports a controversial project backed by Joe Biden. North Dakota Governor Doug Burgum is one of Donald Trump’s most visible and vocal backers, and is considered to be a possible running mate. But he’s grappling with an issue back home that makes for awkward politics. Burgum supports a huge carbon dioxide pipeline in his home state. So does Joe Biden. But Trump does not. Burgum has said the project is less about climate change and more about a business opportunity for North Dakota.
Listen DownloadTrump campaign complains about debate host CNN
The Trump campaign and its supporters are complaining about the TV network hosting this week’s debate. Even though Donald Trump repeatedly called for a debate with Joe Biden and his team agreed to the terms of Thursday’s debate hosted by CNN, the former president and his supporters are crying foul. They’re unhappy with the selection of Jake Tapper to be one of the moderators, and they’re complaining that a Trump spokesperson’s CNN interview was cut short. Trump advisers say they expect an unfair debate, even as the network defends the journalistic experience of its two moderators.
Listen DownloadBiden goes all in on abortion to mark anniversary of Roe reversal
The Biden campaign is doubling down on abortion rights ahead of Thursday night’s debate. President Biden marked the two-year anniversary of the overturning of Roe v. Wade by emphasizing his support of abortion rights. In a series of social media posts, he repeatedly called for the restoration of Roe and blamed Donald Trump for, what he called, “this nightmare.” Trump has repeatedly taken credit for the overturning of the 50-year Supreme Court ruling that guaranteed a right to abortion. However, the former president has resisted supporting a national abortion ban.
