Biden tests positive for COVID-19 campaigning in Nevada
President Biden has tested positive for COVID-19 while campaigning in Las Vegas. After experiencing “mild symptoms” during his trip to Nevada, the president tested positive for the virus. A statement from the White House press secretary says the president will “self-isolate” at home in Delaware and “will continue to carry out all of his duties fully during that time.” Before his infection was announced, Mr. Biden greeted diners at a Las Vegas restaurant. The illness comes as the president faces increasing pressure from Democrats to end his re-election bid.

While Republicans rally around Donald Trump here at the GOP convention, nearly two-thirds of Democrats say President Biden should withdraw from the presidential race and let his party nominate someone else. Those are the findings of a new AP-NORC poll. For the past three weeks, the president has been working to salvage his re-election campaign after a dismal debate. And these poll results contradict Mr. Biden’s claim that “average Democrats” are still with him even if some “big names” want him to step aside.

Republican JD Vance and Vice President Kamala Harris have spoken after the Ohio senator was named Donald Trump’s running mate. The vice president reached out to Vance after he became the GOP vice presidential nominee. She left a congratulatory voicemail. He returned the call and the two exchanged pleasantries. Harris urged Vance to accept a debate invitation either next week or next month. According to people familiar with the matter, the two campaigns are still working on terms for a debate. Meanwhile, Vance will be the keynote speaker here at the Republican National Convention Wednesday night, when he will formally accept the vice presidential nomination.

Secret Service faces questions after Trump rally shooting
The Secret Service is facing questions in the aftermath of the assassination attempt on Donald Trump.
Members of both political parties, including Joe Biden and Donald Trump, are praising the fast action of Secret Service agents. But there also are serious questions being asked how a gunman could have gotten so close to the former president and fired so many shots — one of them striking Trump in the ear. House Speaker Mike Johnson and the chairman of the House Oversight Committee said there would be hearings to investigate what happened.

President Biden spoke with Donald Trump following an attack on the former president at a Pennsylvania rally. The president was at church in Delaware Saturday evening when shots were fired at the Trump rally. After learning of the incident and getting briefed by officials, Mr. Biden condemned the attack. He also spoke to Trump by phone and said he was grateful to hear that he was safe. Mr. Biden called for unity and later returned to the White House to continue monitoring developments following the assassination attempt.
