Most Americans disapprove of the Hunter Biden pardon
There’s not much public support for the Hunter Biden pardon. A new poll from the AP and NORC Center for Public Affairs Research reveals that only about 2 in 10 Americans approve of President Biden’s decision to pardon his son after earlier promising he’d do no such thing. The survey found that only a small share of Americans “strongly” or “somewhat” approve of the president’s decision. About half “strongly” or “somewhat” disapprove of it.

Secretary of State Blinken is heading back to the Middle East. Blinken travels to Jordan and Turkey on Thursday and Friday for his 12th visit to the region since the Israel-Hamas war erupted last year. It’ll be his first trip since the ouster of Syrian President Bashar Assad that’s sparked new fears of instability in the region. This week’s diplomatic talks are expected to focus largely on Syria but also touch on efforts to reach a Gaza ceasefire.

U.S. searching for abducted American in Syria
The United States is searching for a missing American in Syrian prisons. President Biden and top U-S officials believe Austin Tice is alive and the government is communicating with people on the ground in Syria about his possible whereabouts. White House national security adviser Jake Sullivan said locating Tice and getting him home safely is a “top priority” for the U-S. Tice is a former U.S. Marine and a freelance journalist who was abducted in Syria more than 12 years ago.

President-elect Donald Trump repeatedly sought to cut Amtrak’s funding during his first term in office. Ridership on Amtrak reached a record high this year — nearly 33 million customer trips. Despite this year’s numbers, Amtrak still lost money.

President-elect Trump’s incoming Middle East envoy recently visited the region. The Trump administration is not officially in office, but Mideast envoy Steve Witkoff was in Israel and Qatar for high-level talks on landing a ceasefire and hostage deal in Gaza. He met separately in recent weeks with Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu and Qatar’s prime minister. A U-S official said Witkoff has kept in contact with President Biden’s foreign policy team as the two administrations have agreed to coordinate efforts to free the hostages who remain in captivity in Gaza.

President-elect Trump’s Pentagon pick may be in jeopardy. Pete Hegseth is fighting to hold on to his Cabinet nomination amid growing questions about his personal conduct. The former Fox News host faces allegations of sexual misconduct, drunken misbehavior, and financial mismanagement at a veterans’ nonprofit. The Wall Street Journal and other media outlets are reporting that Donald Trump is considering alternatives for defense secretary, including Florida Governor Ron DeSantis.

Saturday’s ceremony will come about 6 weeks before Trump’s inauguration, which will be attended by the Bidens. White House defends Biden’s unconditional pardon of son
The White House is defending President Biden’s full and unconditional pardon of his son, Hunter. Facing a barrage of reporters’ questions about the president’s broken promise, press secretary Karine Jean Pierre said Mr. Biden “wrestled” with the decision to pardon his son. She said the president believes in telling the American people the truth, and he concluded that even though he has confidence in the justice system, he also believes his son’s case was politicized. On several occasions, the president had said “no one is above the law” and that he had ruled out a pardon for Hunter.

President Biden is mourning the death of an American citizen whose body has apparently been held by Hamas for more than a year. According to the Israeli military, an Israeli American soldier who was believed to have been captured alive by Hamas in the October 7th attack last year was killed that day and his body taken into the Gaza Strip. In a White House statement, the president said he was “devastated and outraged” to learn of the death of Omer Neutra. The 21-year-old, who grew up in New York, was serving as a tank commander in the Israel Defense Forces.
