The U-S economy grew faster than expected in the second quarter. The latest numbers from the Commerce Department show an unexpected 2-point-4-percent annual growth rate from April through June. Consumer spending slowed during the quarter, but business investment and state and local government spending grew faster. The report shows continued economic resilience in the face of steadily higher interest rates.

U.S. business activity slowed to a five-month low in July. The Composite PMI index, which tracks manufacturing and service sectors, fell this month. The survey data supported evidence that the U.S. economy was still growing as the third quarter began, but at a slower rate from the previous quarter. However, the Federal Reserve may look at falling input prices and slowed hiring as progress in its bid to lower inflation.

Wall Street hopes to keep its winning streak going after the Independence Day holiday. Investors had a shortened trading day Monday before taking a break on July 4th. When the opening bell sounds on Wednesday morning, Wall Street will be entering the second half of the year in full gear. The Nasdaq registered its strongest first-half performance in 40 years with a more than 31 percent gain. Meanwhile, the S&P 500 is at its highest level since April 2022.
