VP Harris Calls For Ending Senate Filibuster On Abortion Legislation
Tue, Sep 24, 2024 at 1:35 pm
Kamala Harris is calling for an end to the filibuster in the Senate to allow Democrats to pass a law to codify legalized abortion. Democrats have tried and failed in recent years to end the filibuster. That would allow them to pass controversial legislation by virtue of their simple majority, without mustering the 60-votes required by the filibuster. Since the Supreme Court overturned Roe V. Wade in 2022 Democrats, including President Biden have suggested carving out an exception that would allow abortion protections to be passed without the filibuster. The strategy could backfire for Harris, and her party. Republicans appears poised to reclaim control of the Senate, meaning relaxed filibuster rules could allow them to move their own legislation through the chamber with a simple majority in the next Congress.
