McConnell Calls Spending Talks “A Pretty Big Mess”.

The Senate’s top Republican isn’t sounding very optimistic about reaching a compromise spending bill. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell notes he supported a compromise struck in May that raised the debt ceiling but kept spending levels below those sought by the white house. After House fiscal conservatives later passed bills calling for even lower levels McConnell told reporters “. “Without stating an opinion about that, that’s not going to be replicated in the Senate.” There’s growing talk about the likely need for a continuing resolution, with lawmakers not expected to reach a compromise by the end of September.
