Sullivan has ministered at his Fellowship Baptist church since 2018 alongside his wife and two children. The missionary was kidnapped last Thursday. One police official says in a statement that it was miraculous that Sullivan escaped the rescue unharmed. The number of kidnappings in South Africa has risen by 264% over the past decade, but few involve ransoms.
