The federal government says it’s freezing more than two billion dollars in grants and 60 million dollars in contracts to Harvard University. The funding cuts come after Harvard refused to comply with the Trump administration’s demands to limit activism on campus. In a letter to Harvard, the administration called for several actions, including “merit-based” admissions and hiring policies and a review of student and faculty views about diversity. Harvard’s president said the demands violated the university’s First Amendment rights and “no government…should dictate what private universities can teach.”
