Liberty women’s basketball coach Carey Green announced his retirement Thursday after 26 seasons on the job.

The school moved quickly to name his replacement, promoting longtime assistant coach Alexis Sherard.

In his tenure, Green’s teams won 31 conference titles — 15 in the regular season, 16 in conference tournaments. The Lady Flames played in 15 NCAA Women’s Tournaments, reached the Sweet 16 in 2005, and also earned four WNIT bids.

He leaves with a career record of 591-240, the most wins of a Liberty coach in any sport. He was named Big South coach of the year five times.

Sherard spent 18 seasons on Green’s staff. He filled in as head coach and was 6-0 in the 2020-21 season when Green faced health issues.

He previously worked as a men’s basketball assistant at Saint Michael’s, his alma mater, as well as Binghamton and Virginia.

“For 26 years, Coach Green has been the heart and soul of this program, leading with integrity, passion and deep commitment to student-athlete development on and off the court. His legacy is one of excellence and impact, and I want to thank him for laying such a strong foundation,” Sherard said.

“Taking the helm after someone of his caliber is both humbling and exciting. I am deeply grateful for the opportunity to build on the program’s tradition while bringing my own vision to its next chapter.”

The Lady Flames open the 2025-26 season on Nov. 4 with a home game against Frostburg State in Lynchburg, Va. They finished last season with a 26-7 record, 16-2 in Conference USA.
