Aaron Judge passed Joe DiMaggio and took sole possession of fourth place on the New York Yankees’ all-time home run list, hitting a solo shot out of Fenway Park in the first inning of a Friday night game against the Boston Red Sox.
After belting his 362nd career homer, Judge trails only Babe Ruth (659), Mickey Mantle (536) and Lou Gehrig (493) in Yankees history.
Judge launched his milestone homer off Boston right-hander Lucas Giolito, hitting it 468 out to deep center field and well over the Green Monster.
Judge’s 47 homers this season are second to Seattle Mariners catcher Cal Raleigh among American League players. Nineteen have come in the first inning, which are the most in any single inning in a season in major league history.
The Yankees earned a 4-1 win as Judge finished 1-for-3 with two walks (one intentional).
New York has hit a big-league-leading 250 homers this season. Judge has four across his past four games. He passed Yogi Berra for fifth in Yankees history when he socked No. 359 on Tuesday in a 12-2 loss to the Tigers, then drew even with DiMaggio with two in the Yankees’ 9-3 win over Detroit on Thursday.
By taking the opener of a crucial three-game series, New York built a 1 1/2-game lead over Boston for the top American League wild-card position. The Yankees remained three games behind the first-place Toronto Blue Jays in the AL East.
