Olympics-Jones, Gushue win finals at Canadian Olympic curling trials

(Reuters) -Jennifer Jones and Brad Gushue will be returning to the Olympics after skipping their rinks to victories at the Canadian trials in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan on Sunday.

Jones, gold medalist at the 2014 Sochi Olympics, and her Winnipeg-based foursome booked their ticket to the Beijing Winter Games with a 6-5 extra-end victory over Tracy Fleury.

Gushue, who skipped Canada to gold at the 2006 Turin Winter Games, led his St. John’s rink of Mark Nichols, Brett Gallant and Geoff Walker to a 4-3 win over Sochi champion Brad Jacobs.

Jones managed to score only a single in the 10th end when she had an open takeout for the win but stole victory in the extra end when Fleury rubbed a guard on her last throw.

“Going to the Olympics is a dream come true and doing it twice is a privilege,” said Jones, whose team consists of Kaitlyn Lawes, Jocelyn Peterman, Dawn McEwen and Lisa Weagle.

Canada will be out to atone for a miserable performance at the 2018 Pyeongchang Games where the men’s and women’s foursomes returned home without a medal, though they won gold in the mixed doubles.

The 2022 Beijing Olympics are scheduled for Feb. 4-20.
