Five U.S. lawmakers meet with Taiwan’s president in surprise visit

Five members of Congress have traveled to Taiwan in a show of support for the independent island nation. In a surprise visit, the bipartisan group of House lawmakers met with Taiwan’s president to reaffirm U-S support for the self-governing island. The visit comes amid heightened tensions between Taiwan and China. Taiwan has been self-ruled since 1949, but China considers the island part of its own territory. Beijing was quick to condemn the trip by U-S lawmakers, calling it a violation of the “one-China principle.”
