Departing Senators Warn Partisan Tone Is Diminishing Upper Chamber

Departing senators from both parties are lamenting the lack of bi-partisan cooperation on Capitol Hill. Among senators who chose to retire rather than seek re-election, there was a common theme in their parting words. Retiring Democrat Patrick Leahy of Vermont -who had been the longest-serving senator said “If we don’t start working together more, if we don’t know and respect each other, the world’s greatest deliberative body will sink slowly into irrelevance.” Retiring Republican Ray Blunt decried the marginalization of lawmakers and centralization of power in party leaders saying “we have an incredible amount of wasted talent.”
